Once upon a time, in the deep woods, there lived a little squirrel called Skip.

He lived with his mother and big brother Scot on a big, tall tree that had lots of branches.

Skip loved where he lived.

Whenever his mother was not looking and his brother was not around, he went quietly outside his house.

He got on to the landing and looked around happily.

Sometimes he even took a few steps down the branch.

But he was not supposed to go out alone. Oh no!

He was allowed to go out only with his mother or his brother Scot.

He loved his brother who was brave and could jump from branch to branch so beautifully.

Oh, how he wished he could do that too.

One morning, his mother told him that she was going out to gather nuts with his brother.

There was a thunder storm coming she told Skip.

Skip looked outside the window. It was bright and sunny without a cloud in the sky.

How could there be a thunder storm soon, he thought.

Suddenly he became happy.

He would be home alone! Yippie!

He could run down the branch and play happily till his mother and brother got back. They wouldn’t know a thing…

Before leaving, his mother told him to stay at home with his toys.

"Don’t come outside Skip dear... We'll be back soon."

“Yes ma,” said Skip.

He then waited for them to go.

Soon as they had gone down the tree, Skip slowly came to his doorway and looked outside.

The sun was shining brightly between the trees.

It looked like a very happy day. Oooooh yes!

Suddenly he saw two other squirrels jump on to the branch outside his door.

They were bigger than him but smaller than his brother.

Soon as they saw him, they called out, asking him to come over and play.

Skip was a bit scared, but in no time, he was running down the branch towards them.

"Let's play catch," said one of the squirrels.

"Let's go home," said the other squirrel, looking at the sky.

It was suddenly getting darker and darker...

And then there was a clap of thunder.

The two squirrels ran down the branch and jumped on to the next tree.

Skip was all alone on the branch now… and a bit scared.

When he was about to run back home, a big bird came and sat on the branch in front of him.

The bird looked very, very tired.

Skip couldn't run home till the bird moved away.

"Can you please give me way?" he asked the bird "I want to go home..."

But the bird was too tired to listen.

Just then, it started raining.  And Skip did not know what to do.

Another big clap of thunder rolled in the sky.

This time it was louder.

Then came the loudest thunder.

Skip jumped in fright and fell off the branch.

Luckily for him, his mother and brother were just returning home.

They were right under the tree when Skip fell on to the ground.

His mother and brother turned around to look together…

“Skip, is that you?” asked his mother as loud as she could.

Scot ran to Skip. "Are you OK?" he asked.

His mother also ran to him by then.

Skip was so happy to see his mother and brother again.

He hugged them tightly. “I’m OK now…,” he said quietly.

Suddenly there was another big clap of thunder and the rain poured even harder.

All three of them hurried up the tree and rushed inside their house.

Soon as they dried themselves, Skip’s mother got busy making nuts and honey porridge.

As it was cooking, everyone sat around the fire to get warm.

“My baby,” said Skip’s mother to him, “isn’t it a good idea to listen to your ma… once in a while?”

“Yes ma,” said Skip, snuggling closer to his mother… and his mother hugged him even closer.

“That’s my good boy…” said his mother and kissed him on his forehead.

Skip was warm and happy once again.
